Another Loss for NFL’s Lions
Matthew Stafford made his debut, and it was, how shall we say, disappointing? 16-37 for 205 yards and 3 INTs.
It was not that he was executing bad-looking passes. They were well crafted spirals that merely happened to eind up in New Orleans Saints' arms.
Stafford's precision will be criticized for a prolonged period until he begins hitting passes such as the wonderful looking connection with Calvin Johnson on a recurrent basis.
And just what did we all forecast to have happen? All those who had been in support of starting Stafford, allow me to be the first to tell you, there will be more games like this until Stafford gets it. But where was the running game? Where was the offensive line that showed such guarantee in the preseason? Where was the defense?
Ah yes, the defense - a category that was largely unnoticed in the '09 draft as the team opted to concentrate on offense.
No sacks on Drew Brees, which is not truly astonishing as he was merely sacked thirteen times during the 2008 year, but wow, I don't believe they laid a finger on him the entire game.
I recognize I had speculated the Lions winning between 6 to 8 games this season...although presently I'm not so sure. They will not go without any wins like last year; or I hope not.
The Lions are in a steep learning period, and I think Jim Schwartz, Scott Linehan, and Gunther Cunningham are the appropriate coaches to steer the Lions in the right direction.
I'm also fairly certain that because of this performance, the Lions will be doing drills until they fall over.
However I'm not as scared about the offense as I am about the defense. The Lions did put up 27 points, and most of the time, that's going to earn you several games.
However giving up 515 yards, 28 first downs, and six touchdown passes will not earn you a seat at the Super Bowl unless you are purchasing a ticket.
